Starting with Jesus

Congratulations on making the life changing decision to follow Jesus Christ!

This decision has not brought you into a religious system with a bunch of new rules and regulations around your life but has joined you to that which is your new family, the family of God.

Our heart is to help you grow in your relationship with Jesus. So don’t stop here, please take some time to look through this section to learn more about your new life!

Part 1: Having a relationship with Jesus Christ!

Many question, ‘How can I have a personal relationship with God?’

You may feel as if God is looking down on you from a distance and don’t realize that He wants to live within you if you will let Him!

God wants to have a personal relationship with each and every one of you.

~ Psalms 139:17-18, ‘How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. When I awake I am still with you.’

~ Jeremiah 29:11, ‘ “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.” ’

~ 1 John 4:9, ‘This is how God showed His love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him.’

Beginning this new and exciting relationship with your Lord and Saviour is simple. All you need to do is receive the free gift of Salvation.

How? Well sin has been around since Adam and Eve disobeyed God in the Garden of Eden. We all sin and fall short of the God’s glory no matter how big or little the crime. However, God sent His Son, Jesus, to die on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins.

~ John 3:16, ‘For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.’

This salvation is now free for all of us and we can all have the girt of eternal life with Jesus. The answer is simple: We need to surrender our lives to the Lord, admitting we are sinners, and ask for forgiveness. We then need to receive Jesus Christ into our hearts and lives.

A simple prayer can be said. For example:

Dear Lord Jesus

I admit that I am a sinner but I would like to confess and ask for your forgiveness. I believe that You died for my sins and want to lay my life down before You and ask that You would come into my heart so that I may follow You as my Heavenly Father.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

It does not have to be long or perfect; it only needs to come from your heart.

Part 2: Assurance with Jesus!

Once you’ve accepted Jesus into your lives His presence is forever dwelling within you.

  • Romans 8:11  Does the Spirit of the one who brought Jesus back to life live in you? Then the one who brought Christ back to life will also make your mortal bodies alive by his Spirit who lives in you.

~ You are delivered from Judgment after death!

  • John 10:9, ‘I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.’

  • Romans 10:13, ‘Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’

  • Romans 8:1, ‘Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.’

~ You become a child of God, the King of Kings. You are accepted into the kingdom of Heaven and you now have dominion over the earth! You can now live a life that truly pleases the Lord!

  • John 1:12, ‘Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.’

~ You will live forever with God!

  • John 3:16, ‘For God so love the world that He gave His one and only Son, so that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.’

God is now your heavenly father and His unconditional love for you and favor towards you will never change.

  • John 10:27-29, ‘My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater then all; no one can snatch them out of My Father’s hand.’

Part 3: Challenges with God!

The Christian walk is wonderful and that first step of accepting Jesus is life-changing. Your relationship with the Lord becomes a lifestyle and is not something you turn on, on a Sunday and switch off for the rest of the week. In this way God walks with us through the up’s and down’s, the trials and tribulations as well as the celebrations. God wants us to grow with Him and one way He does this is by challenging us. During these times we are forced to lean on Him and let our faith guide us, in this way our characters are developed.

  • James 1:2-4, ‘Consider it pure joy, my brothers, when faced with trials of many kinds, because you know the testing if your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.’

Giving your life to God doesn’t automatically make you perfect. We are all humans and will always make mistakes but God is there to forgive us, as long as we are sincere and repent, our Heavenly Father will always be there to pick us up and put us on the right road again.

  • 1 John 1:9, ‘If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.’

Part 4: Growing with God!

Because God wants us to develop our relationships with Him, He has given us tools to help us.

  1. The Bible: By reading our bibles we get to know who God really is. This is God’s message to us and it never changes. It offers us hope when we feel hopeless and it tells us of our eternal destiny and purpose.

  1. Prayer: We communicate with God simply by talking with Him through prayer. Your prayers don’t need to be religious or perfect. God wants to hear from you, He wants you to come to Him as you are: your talents and shortcomings. God loves us the way we are.

  1. The Body of Christ: Once you have become a Christian it is important that you fellowship with other Christians. They are like-minded and can encourage you and lift you up when you need it. By surrounding yourself with Christians you become part of the family of Christ and you can grow and mature in their influence.

  1. Spread the News: God wants everyone to know about Him and His love extends to everyone on earth. He wants you to share your new found love for the Lord with others and be a testimony to them so that they might have the same life-changing experience as you.

  • Matthew 5:14-16, ‘You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.’

  1. Make your decision public: One way to do this is to be baptized in water. This is an outward expression of what God has done on the inside. By doing this we are symbolizing how we are dying to our old ways and becoming a new cleansed creation in God.

  • Mark 16:15-16, ‘He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.”’
